Welcome to Third Grade

Third grade is an exciting year!
In math we are studying addition and subtraction of multi-digit numbers. We are also building our understanding of multiplication and division, and learning math facts. It's a year when we introduce fractions. Third grade math also teaches measurement, algebraic thinking, and geometry!
Our science focus is varied and exciting, from plant science to measurement, sun & space to solar cooking. The science units are also aligned with engineering, so we learn both together! We enjoy tons of hands-on experiments and engineering projects.
In class, 3rd graders use the Daily 5 to build literacy skills in writing, reading, and word study. We read, write, study word patterns and vocabulary, and discuss different genres and elements of literature. Third graders grow their literacy skills every day.
An exciting part of third grade is the book reports the students complete. Every month, students write a unique book report that is connected to a different genre. These book reports are creative and fun, as well as highlighting all of our great reading!
Our social studies focus is the United States geography and culture. We begin the year by studying the map and our place on it, as well as the diverse and wonderful cultures represented in our class. An exciting unit will be the early Northwest Native peoples, learning all about how the first residents of our state lived. We will also learn about our neighbors, Canada and Mexico.
We learn many other exciting subjects, too! Such as: cursive, music, fitness, religion & social skills, and service learning
In our class we use ClassDojo to communicate with families, share our learning, and keep track of student behavior choices. Please stay connected with us!
