One of the teachers commented that the kids were so excited - it was like a rock star was in the building! Well, she was! Nina (as she asked the students to call her) was a big hit with all the students - Kindergarten to 8th grade. This is a true gift - to be able to capture the hearts and minds of children of all ages.
Starting out her presentations, Nina shared the books she has written. Her first published book The Night I Followed the Dog is over 20 years old! When Pigasso Met Mootise is the title of one of her books that many students recognize from 2nd grade - one of Mrs. McCloskey's favorites (and yes, she was able to have it signed by Nina). She then talked about her writing and process. She uses journals to write and draw and has kept them all (over 40). A 1st grader, Conor, was the only student from all the sessions who guessed her number 1 rule about her journals ... "never rip out a page". Nina also showed the students a book she wrote as a 9 year old.
The sessions included a drawing activity in which Nina demonstrated her techniques for creating characters using clothes, hats, facial expressions, and, most popular among the children, glasses! The students followed her directions on how to draw a dog character. She shared many tips for creating a unique character. In the pictures below you will see some of the amazing drawings the students made.
I wanted to let you know how much JT and Jonah enjoyed the author visit today.
They have been drawing dogs all evening.
Great job inviting her to school to spend time with the kids.
Author, Nina Laden, visited Sophie's school today. Sophie was part of a group of kids that joined the author for lunch and that was a surprise for her. "MOM! I ate lunch with NINA LADEN. She is so incredibly nice!" Sophie shared the different insights the author shared and she was so excited that she had a chance to give her a Valentine. "Mommy, Nina Laden told us that we should NEVER tear a page from our journals. We might just want to use that experience or idea some day..." Thanks Nina Laden for sharing your talent with the kids at St. Matthew School. 📚
