On Wednesday I returned to the library to find Veronica Wood whose children attended St. Matthew School, waiting for me. Her daughter, Kate, was a student in the last class I taught as a 6th - 8th grade teacher before heading down the hall to become the teacher-librarian. Kate died five years ago while attending college, and our school's sick room is dedicated to her memory. It was so wonderful to see Veronica, but when I found out why she was visiting I was so honored! She and six of her friends decided to contribute to the library in Kate's memory. Their generous donation will allow us to purchase many new books for the library! I know Kate would have been delighted!
Thursday found me attending the funeral for Doris Rutzel, St. Matthew School's first librarian, and the lady for whom the Endowment is named. She was a dynamic, spunky woman and I had the privilege of working with her when I first began teaching at St. Matthew. After she retired she would come by and visit wearing her driving cap and driving a red miata!
